The Whole Diet – A Context for Food Choices
As decision-makers in our lives, we often have plenty of information, even too much; what we need is context and meaning. Take our decisions on the food we eat.
As we eat, our bodies process the foods and beverages we consume, mechanically (chewing, etc.) and chemically, converting foods into substances for use in the body. This highly dynamic metabolic process, digestion, has two distinct phases, catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism breaks down molecules to make energy and nutrients available; then anabolism uses this energy and these nutrients to construct and refresh components required for ongoing body function.
